I don't know if it's a grasshopper or not...looks like it, maybe. Anyone know what "type" of grasshopper it is? I'd be curious.

Sorry, don't know what the bug is, but I checked out your Flickr photos—lookin' good! We had Russian Sage in our old place, and it always came back, but it never really got bushy like I've seen other places. It's a hardy plant though.
I also like how you have 2 ledges on your front porch/stairs. From what I've seen, most of the time it just slopes down to the 1 ledge like ours does. I'll have to get some planters like yours at some point.

I think, honestly, my soil is too good for Russian Sage to flourish, strangely enough. Everything I've read lately says it thrives on poor soil and dry conditions. So I'm going to see how it does and go from there...
I like having the two ledges on the wing walls--more room to sit without having to worry about someone taking your porch furniture. :) As for the planters, check out bungalowavenue on eBay...they were having a going-out-of-business sale, which is how I got these pretty cheap (relatively speaking). Not sure what's left, but it's worth checking out...they're local (Galewood neighborhood of Chicago), and really nice. At least to me they were. :)

You've got a Katydid Nymph on your bush. There are some great pictures on bugguide.net that perfectly match what you have here. This little guy is probably scouting out the local food supply in your front yard.
I name it "Smacky."
